Hercules RMX: Retrospective
First of all, I’d like to thank all the readers and commenters for taking an interest in my Hercules RMX review. I had no idea when I wrote it that so many people would be reading it – I think that article alone has basically quadrupled my blog traffic! (not that there was very much traffic to begin with, haha). Its nice to know people are appreciating the stuff I’ve written, and it makes me want to write more now that I have some semblance of an audience. I just picked up an MPK49 so a review may be forthcoming if I ever get around to it…
Anyway, in regards to the review I may have to revise my opinion a bit after having spent quite some time with the thing. Don’t get me wrong – I still think its a great piece of hardware – its just there have been some performance issues I haven’t been able to get rid of that have really decreased its value in my eyse. Recently one of my readers sent me a question which illustrates this – below is that email and my response. Make of it what you will.
Hey Jacob,
Nice review! Thank you, it was very in-depth and helpful. I just got this myself and figuring out how to put it all together. Finally got it to work, with all the cables and stuff you know, but my question is, you mentioned that when you played your music, you heard clicking and skipping. I noticed that too. How did you get to fix yours exactly? I’m asked to play for a small group of friends this Saturday and I would hate for them to hear all the clicking when I’m playing.
Any help is appreciated! Thank you in advance, J!Newbie VDJ,
DJ Bones (haaaa! the name is funny but it stuck, I’m way skinny that’s why)
Hey Bones,Yeah, the skipping thing is a bitch, its actually been annoying me a lot lately. Sometimes the interface will work fine for an hour then start slowing down and stuttering for a while. I’m not sure if its the interface’s fault or some background process I have running on XP thats making my CPU chug… either way it sucks. Here are some things I’ve done to reduce the frequency of these dropouts -
- Increase the ASIO buffer size
- Turn off my wireless card
- In task manager, set the priority for my music app to “real time’
- Turn off any unnecessary background processes
Even with these fixes though I still run into trouble sometimes. Luckily I’m mostly just playing house parties for my friends though and they’re usually too drunk to care / notice. However, these issues really detract from the value of the RMX as playing in a real club situation with these problems could be disastrous.
I’m actually thinking about getting another dedicated audio interface and using the RMX as just a MIDI control surface since I like the layout so much. Its a shame such a potentially great peace of hardware is plagued with these kind of stability problems.
Anyway, thanks for your feedback, and I hope you rock the party on Saturday!
-Jacob
Is anyone else having these problems? Does anyone have fix suggestions?
UPDATE: Thanks for the suggestions guys! Updating the firmware did help a bit, though I still get some problems in Ableton Live when I’m playing too many tracks at once. I’m thinking this may be only an Ableton problem though – I’ve started using Traktor 3 and so far I’ve had zero problems with the sound no matter what I throw at it! This makes me happy.

Hercules recently released a firmware upgrade:
http://ts.hercules.com/eng/index.php?pg=view_files&gid=2&fid=28&pid=215&cid=1
Did you get the chance to install the update?
To get rid of the annoying clicking and skipping, try taking off the key change/match facility on your software. I know it does that with virtual dj, don’t know about traktor or anything else but i imagine it is that.
Just passing by.Btw, your website have great content!

Making Money $150 An Hour
hey there jacob, brilliant review! i really like the way you go through all the little things that someone who actually uses a product will encounter rather than skipping straight to the technical aspects as most bigger websites do, very helpful.. in fact i was considering buying the behringer bcd3000 but am now pretty much convinced i need the hercules.
one thing though.. does it have a built in sound-card? that was one of the reasons i was previously going for the behringer as i’m only after a very amateurish DJing adventure and don’t want the hassle of buying and installing a separate sound card (my laptop is pretty sketchy on specs as well and only has 2 USBs) – sorry if the answer to this question is blindingly obvious but i am an idiot..
thanks! and keep on writing, you clearly have talent!
yes- it has a built in soundcard but there are some stability issues (at least for me). i think they have also recently released a controller-only version which doesn’t have the built in sound card, so make sure you check. the original RMX DOES have a soundcard though.
Nice review!!! was wondering if you could answer this question for me that i cant seem to find anywhere. I just got the rmx console as a gift the other day and im thinking about returning it…..Can i use this interface the same as lets say serato?? meaning if i hook up my two turntables to the input/output’s will the virtual dj software recognize it and allow me to scratch/mix similar to serato? or are the input/output’s just strictly used for external add on’s? hope you can help thanks!!
yes- you can use the two phono inputs for vinyl control like in Serato, although I haven’t tested this. I’ve been using the phono ins just for recording some of my vinyls to MP3, and it works great. I think the ability to use time-coded control vinyls depends on the software you’re using – I’m not sure if VirtualDJ allows this but I’m pretty sure Traktor does. but the two phono inputs definitely provide this opportunity if your software allows it.
I was a little skeptical about purchasing the Hurcules RMX, but after reading your review I was pretty much sold. I was actually looking at getting the Vastex VCI-100… Anyway, now that it’s been a while since you wrote your review and now that you’ve had time to really put the RMX console to use, are there any other cons for the RMX? The only reason I’m asking is because I too like to get more bang for my buck. Let me know your thoughts.
I had the same problems with the sound when connected to my pc so i hooked it up to my mac and everything is working great. just been thinking about how to map midi to have better control of the fx and 4 decks. Anythoughts?
Hey, great review. I have one question though. How is the scratching on the system? I am by no means a professional but is it workable? Is there a delay after you let go of the jog wheel? Thanks
Nice review of the hercules dj console mainly based on your review and some other reviews online i bought one. Being the bedroomdj i am I must say its a sweet thing to use *proper* hardware instead of just software. About the skipping i havent noticed any on my dj console so far.
Thanks for the great, detailed review and the follow up afterwards on the Hercules RMX. I was considering the NuMark OmniControl but the Hercules RMX has had better reviews and I like the layout of the controller over NuMarks. I look forward to purchasing the Hercules RMX and plan to use it with my Mac. I’ve been DJing for over 12 years and I’m slowing moving to all digital. Currently use iPods along with my table-top CD players but looking to consolidate.
Keep up the good work and hope you review more DJ gear. Thanks.
Hi, I’ve been doing a lot of research and this unit and software seems to make the most sense for my DJ’ing business.
My main question is do the latest versions of the RMX still have sound-cards?
My main concern is that the unit can do what you mention, cue and hear the song your before play it to the audience.
Im moving up from CD’s finally and have a Macbook Pro less than two years old
so I assume it should all work well for me.
On another note it comes with a lite version of Virtual DJ, what the advantages of the full version. Thanks! John
